The public is invited to view show-quality examples of these unusual
plants at the 48th annual SC&SS show to be held Saturday and Sunday,
May 3-4, at Sacramento Garden and Art Center, 3330 McKinley Blvd. Hours
are: 9am to 5pm Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday. Admission is free.
The show hopes to call attention and spark an interest in the unique
qualities and subtleties of this large and interesting segment of the
botanical world. Cacti and succulents come in myriad forms and many
make ideal garden plants that thrive in our Mediterranean climate. Others
are useful as interesting, year-round potted specimens indoors or on
the patio. They are popular for their adaptability, ease of care, drought
resistance and ecologically friendly attributes – important considerations
in this age of environmental challenges.
Vendors from both northern and southern California will be offering
a large selection of cactus and succulents for sale and can offer advice
and suggestions on their use and care. Decorative containers for their
display will also be offered for sale.
The Sacramento Cactus and Succulent Society was chartered in 1960 and
has more than 70 members from many Central Valley communities. Monthly
meetings feature speakers and collectors who share their expertise in
growing these curiosities and many present slide shows of their travels
in pursuit of first-hand knowledge. The club welcomes all who would
like to learn more about these unusual plants.
